By: Nika Tay Hui Min

School holidays are around the corner! Thinking of creative ways to entertain and engage your child? Fret not! Artpazionate is back with our most popular art camps, jam-packed with activities that will be sure to keep your child occupied, teeming with excitement and loads of smiles! 😊

Art is more than a one-dimensional paper and paint. This time, we are pushing all the boundaries with our unique, fun-filled programs using an array of textures and mixed media art that invigorates and wows their senses. From the sensorial touch of clay modelling, plushie toys, to 3D dreamy unicorns and mesmerizing glow-in-the-dark landscapes – there is never a dull moment with us!

In this current digital age, one of the foremost concerns of any parent is the uphill battle in fighting against the ‘tech-addict’ syndrome. Scientific studies have shown that prolonged, excessive usage of mobile devices can cause harmful side-effects including decreased attention-span and concentration, short-temperedness and even sleep disorders.

Pokemon Camp

Rather than allowing your child to mindlessly scroll through social media apps, playing from one Tiktok video to the next mobile game, why not channel their time and energy into meaningful artistic endeavors. What better way than to make their all-time favorite Pokémon characters into tote-bags, plushies, figurines and create one-of-a-kind artworks they can display and carry around.

Many studies have shown that art promotes creativity and stimulates sensorial co-ordination while empowering your child to learn new skills and unleash their inner artist! #Ichooseart

Pop Art Camp

What about a selfie? Or pumpkins? If this sounds like something up your alley, come join us our 2-day pop art camp! Re-create the iconic yet instagrammable Yayoi Kusama’s polka-dotted pumpkin. And go back in time to paint your very own colorful, retro-esque and eye-catching ‘selfie’ but on a canvas – no filters necessary!

Parent-Child Bonding Camp

There’s no better way to deepen your parent-child relationship than to have a jamming good time with art. Our parent-child bonding camp is the perfect activity to do so. This session is intentionally designed to create an environment where open communication, respecting and valuing each other’s opinions, and encouraging teamwork by working towards a common goal can flourish. As you and your child work hand-in-hand (literally) to accomplish an artwork, this will be the golden opportunity to build your child’s confidence while also broadening your perspective to see your child in a different light.

3 Ways to Nurture Creativity at Home

Looking at your child play, you would have marveled at the little ingenious ways and imaginative world a child creates and plays in. As Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world.” In other words, imagination creates possibilities that are endless.

Every child is born with imagination and creativity. For a child, there’s just something special about their imagination, something infinitely boundless in their world-view. The sky is the limit! And Art takes this a step further.

Through art, creativity and imagination can be further nurtured and developed. As a matter of fact, parents play an extremely vital role in fostering and pushing new frontiers in their child’s creativity. Here are some ways that you as a parent can explore to create a more conducive and holistic art environment at home.

Create an Art Corner

Children thrive when they have a space, materials and time to be creative! Hence, just by creating a small corner at home where your child can express spontaneously and be limitless in his/her imagination goes a long way. In fact, making an art ‘studio’ need not be expensive at all! Stock it up with simple drawing materials, recyclable items and a variety of craft materials in different shapes, sizes and textures, a corner sure to enliven your child’s artistic endeavors!

Some ideas and materials to fill up your art corner with:

  • Crayons
  • Color Pencils
  • Fabrics such as felts, cloths, clothes
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Rolls from paper towels
  • Shoe boxes
  • Paper plates
  • Egg cartons
  • Washable paints
  • Playdough or clay

Fun Tip: Be prepared for a mess! Use vinyl cloths or newspaper for an easier clean-up.

Allow freedom of expression

As parents, the tendency and urge to guide, draw for your child is strongly present. However, such assistance or directions may back-fire. It is important to allow your child to think and experiment freely for themselves with no pre-existing structures or notions of what their art should be like.

Doing so, taps into their infinite creativity to think outside-of-the-box, explore, discover, imagine and manifest their abstract ideas into visual images on paper. When a child finishes his/her piece, another key pointer is to not suggest any further additions, changes or criticisms.

What we are advocating here, and at Artpazionate, is creative self-expression, unique incorporation of one’s personality and the joy of creating an art piece. Not perfection or a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ artwork.

Explore your child’s creative process

With intentional navigation and exploration of art with your child, it encourages innovation and critical-thinking skills by exposing them to rich creative experiences.

Therefore, as a parent, it is so important to be open-minded in asking open-ended questions while exploring your child’s creative work. For instance, asking questions like Tell me more about your drawing? I see that you’ve used blue in your painting, why is that so?

Never make immediate assumptions about your child’s painting but let them do the honors of opening up and communicating/presenting their thoughts while thinking critically and evaluating through their own creative processes.

A parent’s role in nurturing and fostering a child’s imagination, creativity, self-esteem, critical-thinking amongst other developmental skills through art is absolutely paramount and cannot be understated. One of the most precious gifts a parent can give to their child is the power of empowerment! To empower them by gifting them the opportunity to explore the infinite possibilities of their untapped minds and unleash the innate creative potential already within them!

According to the International Child Art Foundation, “A child who is exposed to the arts acquires a special ability to think creatively, be original, discover, innovate, and create intellectual property—key attributes for individual success and social prosperity in the twenty-first century.”

Whether you are looking to simply nurture your child’s artistic talent or simply have fun, our diverse offerings of children art classes from drawing, painting to craft-making will be sure to discover their inner artist and enrich their world holistically.

At Artpazionate, we fully believe our art classes for your kids is another window of opportunity to tap into their boundless curiosities, stimulating their imagination and empowering them to see and create the world in a different light!

Why send your kid to Art Class?

Studies have shown that exposure to art in the early stages of a child’s life promotes activity in the brain, paving the foundation for the development of valuable life skills. Children have an amazing active imagination, when cultivated and nurtured correctly can benefit their future. Here are a couple reasons why you should send your child to art class.

Physical Skills

The most prominent development you’ll notice upon sending your child to art class is their physical progress. Painting helps develop your child’s hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. A developed hand-eye coordination will benefit all the physical aspects of your child’s life from catching a ball to throwing a dart. Constant practice of art further helps children master their fine and gross motor skills. It also makes them more aware of their surroundings.

Expression and Communication

Art is a highly subjective and intuitive medium, it allows children with a form expression and communication that is invaluable. In the words of Leo Tolstoy ‘Art is the activity by which a person, having experienced an emotion, intentionally transmits it to others’. Emotions can be a difficult thing for children to grapple with, they cannot fully comprehend why they are feeling a certain way and only that they feel it whole-heartedly. These can cause a lot of tension and stress in their leave, inevitably amounting to anger or sadness. Pent up emotions can lead to severe behavioural issues and self-induced social isolation. Daily art classes provide children with a healthy way to express themselves and communicate with others when they find it difficult to. Having an outlet to analyse your feelings is a necessity, for children art is the perfect medium to do so.

Cognitive skills

Art ignites creativity in the minds of children, ensuring that they tackle problems in a creative manner. Art classes helps children expand their imagination and aid in the problem-solving abilities. Thinking out of the box is a coveted skill that is hard to learn, encouraging this skill in the early stages of a child’s life through art classes will ensure that they approach their problems in an innovative manner. Encouraging creativity also allows children to see more than just the tip of the iceberg, widening their perspective and equating them with the tools to tackle all problems.

Social Skills

Participating in art classes will equip children with the necessary skills to understand, adapt, respect and relate to other people’s way of thinking. Ensuring that your child is introduced to a social learning environment at a young age will ensure they develop a sense of independence and self-discipline in a relaxed environment.

Art is something that can benefit everyone’s life, especially children. Take a look through our site to see the classes we have to offer and sign your kids up. We promise they’ll love it!

2 Key Skills Your Child Can Learn Through Art

The growing years of a child are crucial to their future development. In Singapore, there is a strong emphasis placed on education. All books and no play will stifle a child’s creativity, this is especially true as they grow up into an adult. Childhood only comes once and it is important to treasure this short amount of time to give them something memorable to look back on as an adult.

Creative art programs help to grow a child cognitively, emotionally and socially. When children are free to express their perspective openly on a blank sheet of paper, they allow their imagination to run and a new world comes alive. Your child will be exposed to different textures, materials and consistencies during children’s art classes.

What is the purpose of art classes for kids?

Art aims to provide kids with a form of individual expression. The art classes place an emphasis on the process over the end product. Art Pazionate believes in the beauty of living in the moment, in enjoying the experience. It is important for the kids to create beautiful and fun memories with their fellow classmates as they explore the different aspects of art.

Also, kids have a natural curiosity for everything and possess the urge to touch and feel things that are new to them. Through the art classes, kids can have different hands-on experiences such as holding a pencil to draw outlines and shade, touching wet paint and feeling the contrast between fresh, sticky glue and the matte finish of dried glue.

Below are two key skills that children can learn through art.

1. CREATIVITY

Creativity cannot be taught, it can only be induced. Children are naturally creative, but when they blossom into young adults, they gradually lose their creativity due to their surrounding environment.

It is commonplace for mainstream schools to box up the options available to students. “There is only one right answer and the rest are wrong” – a prevalent mindset imprinted on impressionable youths. Undoubtedly, this is fair practice when it comes to examinations.

However, this academic excellence does not directly translate into good work performance once the children of yesterday, enter the workforce as adults today. Many on-the-job processes are not rigidly framed, unlike their academic counterparts. More often than not, the workplace demands results and the road to achieving that result is determined by the individual in charge of the task.

However, the ability to think out-of-the-box is overlooked in schools. It takes an abstract mind to look beyond the surface and come up with innovative ideas that bring about change and growth. A creative outlook might also be the key to new business ideas and the crux to securing the next big contract or appointment.

Art classes allow children to develop that soft skill – creativity. Children who partake in art activities in their younger days have the chance to hone and strengthen their competence in abstract evaluation and innovation. As art is a free-flowing expression, there is no right or wrong to any art piece since beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Children can learn to bring their imagination to life in art classes. Through this, it will help them bring out their creativity and take a breather from the heavy demands of schoolwork. By attending art classes, it is also a form of relaxation and playtime for your child, preventing burn-out.

2. CONFIDENCE

As mentioned above, art has no boundaries and the artist is free to express their thoughts and ideas. When there is no defined right or wrong answer, it takes the stress away from the end result. The teachers at Art Pazionate will guide your child every step of the way. Children are not pressured into drawing the “perfect” portrait or animal at the end of each lesson. In fact, they can take their time to draw or paint their imaginary pet or monster with as much detail as they like.

This freedom allows children to pursue their interests from a young age. They do not have to conform to a fixed set of rules. When there are no grading criteria set in stone, children will not be “penalized”, this helps the budding artist to build confidence in his work and view his artwork with pride.

During the art classes, the teachers will slowly incorporate advanced drawing methods into the art program. This blend of freedom with the right mentorship will allow your child to draw better as the art lessons progress.

When a child has self-confidence, he or she will not be as easily affected by naysayers or negative influence that might come their way in their development process. It is important for children to find and cultivate an interest from young so they can grow holistically.

Art is a form of self-expression. Finding the right avenue to express themselves from a young age is crucial to keeping kids grounded. Art lessons help to lay the foundation to a happy childhood where creativity flourishes and confidence is instilled. Enroll your child with Art Pazionate today!
